5.0 out of 5 stars the best they did, 9 Dec 2005
By D. J. Ashley "davidashley650" (london) - See all my reviews

If you like the more recent Del amitri then stay away , but if you love early 80s jangly guitar pop of aztec camera and orange juice then buy this cd. In the sleeve notes justin currie says that there are too many words but for me when they are this good the more the better. The guitars literally sparkle. No dodgy neil young chords (that drown some of their later stuff) just fantastic tunes. Nearest comparisons i can give are prefab sprouts "swoon" and trashcan sinatras "cake".
I bought this in the year of its release (1985) and I still love it

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the finest album ever, 8 Feb 2005
By Peter Dean (England) - See all my reviews
I just couldn't believe the previous reviews of this album and felt I should put the record straight.
Yes, this album was recorded in the days when del Amitri recorded a different style of music, but this was a melodious contortion of interweaving guitars played with an almost classical style. This album has more 5 star tracks than almost any other I can think of. Alongside Prefab Sprout's "Steve McQueen" I have listened to this for 2 decades and still love almost every track.
Del Amitri did not disown this album, far from it. The album was released on Chrysalis with all rights owned by the record label. When Chrysalis dumped the Dels they refused to earn Chrysalis a penny and never played anything off it again. But hey, this had been 5 years before Waking Hours and their musical direction had changed massively. I recall Justin and Iain promoting Nothing Ever Happens on TV AM and jumping passionately to the defence of the album when Anne Diamond (or someone) brushed it off as being early efforts that didn't make the grade.

Once again, if you enjoy intelligent, melodic pop played with a high degree of excellence give this album a try. If you're only into AOR, then don't bother. But don't forget, this album is 20 years old!

5.0 out of 5 stars 1985's ALBUM OF THE YEAR, 18 April 2005
By Mr. I. Stephen "dj_dadrock" - See all my reviews

We all read reviews of albums and we all disagree with them from time to time, then utter a huffed dismissive comment about why the person bothered reviewing it at all if they dislike it that much ... but after reading the first two reviews here, I find myself being whisked back to exactly 20 years ago, leaping to this album's defence.

Sure, their sound changed quite radically some three years after and the tunes grew to be more radio-friendly and much deserved success came their way as a result, but that's not to dismiss this album as some wide-eyed shambling indie effort by a band just starting out.

No, to any fans of quality guitar pop from the 80's ( say, Aztec Camera, Lloyd Cole, Prefab Sprout, Blue Nile ) this album is an absolute MUST. It's just magnificent from start to finish.

Go try !
