5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable, 27 Feb 2004

(REAL NAME)
Don't be put of by the rather unusual combination of Barbirolli and the RPO. This was part of a boxedset originally issued by the World Record Club in the 60's. My late father bought the box and this recording of the Sibelius Second soon became very worn out!! It is the most intense reading of the work I have ever encountered. Barbirolli was of course a great Sibelian, but his mother died whilst the recording was being made, and maybe this is what gave the reading a special quality. The stereo recorded sound is excellent for it's time (1963)and the RPO brass is stunning. Do not miss this!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Sibelius 2 ever, 2 Nov 2007
I totally agree with the previous reviewer. Not only is this a fantastic performance, but also a superb recording. Having said that, I've got the LP, not the CD. What would be interesting is if it were brought out on SACD as an analogue to DSD remaster.
