There are many versions of Hovhaness' Symphony No. 2 'Mysterious Mountain'. However, I find this the most poetical rendition where one can feel the presence of a mysterious mountain! The piece opens slowly and majestically, whilst in the central movement we are treated to an exuberant double fugue and then back to softer, more gentle shades of colour. Hovahaness was an original and one of the very first Western composers to attempt to unite Eastern and Western musics - although not in a clumsy way but, rather, more by way of integrating and synthesising their several influences. For example, Indian raga is so involved with entering into the subtle moods of a raga and Hovhaness has a very refined sensitivity towards musical moods. Hovhaness was a very melodic composer - which ran rather contrary to the trend of his times - whilst, perhaps mainly due to the use of modes in his music, his harmonies are reminiscent of Ralph Vaughan-Williams.
Hovhaness was an unashamedly regilious composer of spiritual music speaking to the heart and soul - in that sense a precursor, by many years, of the music of Arvo Part, Gorecki, and John Tavener.
Fritz Reiner's interpretation likewise wears it's heart upon its sleeve and I find it so very easy to become totally absorbed into this unique musical world and that of the spirit of the mystical mountain. It may be that Reiner takes liberties with the actual tempo markings on the score, but, nevertheless, I find him to be truly inspired turning the printed music into a splendid visionary experience in vibrantly resonant symphonic sound.
Hovhaness, didn't have any specific mountain in mind, as far as I understand it, although in other works he does (Nanga Parvat, Ararat, Mount St. Helens, etc) but rather the archetype of the Mountain. Hovhaness loved mountains and enjoyed walking within them too. I always find Hovhaness' music ennobling, uplifting and rich and if you wanted just one piece of his then this, one of his most popular pieces, has no finer interpretation than on this CD and I cannot recommend it too highly.
