I've started to collect most of recommended recordings of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony, starting from Mravinsky's both mono & stereo versions, Karajan's DG & EMI (70s), Giulini's EMI & DG, Ormandy's RCA & Sony, Furtwangler's Cairo Live DG, Solti, Stokowski, Horenstein etc. I recently came across this conductor through the superb RCA stereo recording of Struass Tone Poems, and immediately I purchased this Tchaikovsky CD.

First, I was astounded by the recording quality, it is stereo recording made in 1957, and it sounds far better than many modern digital recordings! Secondly, I thought about how much Chicago SO must have suffered to acomplish this level of performance! It is not just accuracy of playing I'm talking about, but the sheer expressiveness of music-making by every part of the orchestra.

Reiner does not emphasize the catastrophic outburst of passion in the outer movements in the manner of Mravinsky or Karajan, but succeeds in adding more depth and maturity to the symphony as a whole. Now I often come back to Reiner's recording, when I feel tired of traditional over-passionate suicidal Pathetique.

Poor Chicago Symphony! They had George Solti after Reiner.
