3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not a first choice for most, 18 Jan 2007
By Mr. P. D. Humphreys "peedurr" (Swindon, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have the complete set of Brahms with this orchestra and conductor. At first glance this would seem irresistible: Mackerras separates the violins to left and right, uses a small orchestra of the size that Brahms himself favoured, and he makes the important exposition repeat in the symphony (and in the others in the series). But things aren't as good as they should be: there is a superficiality here, I feel that we don't get to the heart of this immensely inspired music, and while Mackerras is quite right in saying that Brahms would vary the basic pace of movements, rather than rigidly keeping in time, the speed changes here sound calculated rather than natural. So this is an excellent buy, as long as you have a more (dare I say it) traditional reading as well.
