As far as musical soundtracks go, this is a good buy, however it does appear to me to be somewhat slightly over the top as are many Broadway musicals. Although Petula Clark is not as powerful vocally as Barbara Dickson, you can't ignore the fact that she is a very good actress. I feel that she gives the most heartfelt performance of Mrs Jonstone that i've heard so far . . . the part where she has to hand over one of her twins to Mrs Lyons really touched me, and when she witnesses her sons tragic deaths, I have to be honest, it almost drew tears from my eyes. However, it still remains that no one can give a performance of "Tell me it's not true" quite the same as Barbara Dickson. David Cassidy makes the absolute perfect Mickey. His scouse accent is wonderfully impressive and well practiced and his singing voice and style is nothing short of fantastic. Considering Davids performance then, I was dissapointed at younger brother Shauns as Eddie. Although another exceptional singer, I feel he ought to be reminded that Eddie is in fact from a middle class surburban Liverpool home, not an aristocratic palace of which he may be the descendent of a long line of army majors. We dont all talk terribly oh gosh golly! The rest of the cast I can safely say are exemplary, Willy Russel provides the narrators role with a distinctively honest and matter of fact tone, and the musical arrangement is better than ever, however I still feel that this version of the soundtrack lacks something that the others have. I find it to be somehow less authentic. If you're a huge Blood Brother fan then you really ought to own a copy now, at least you'll have very little to complain about. Petula fans will probably like this aswell. anyone else, buy the original before you buy this.
