5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic songs delivered on some borrowed acoustic guitars, 25 Sep 2001
By Jason Parkes "We're all Frankies'" (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
There are songs from the 1st four AMC-albums ('The Restless Stranger'; 'Engine'; 'California' & 'United Kingdom'- ALL IN NEED OF REISSUE!!!!!!!!)& some new songs: the Eitzel solo single 'Take Courage', an upbeat take on 'Everclear's upbeat number 'Crabwalk' & an early take on 'Mercury's 'What Godzilla Said...' here titled 'Nothing Can Bring Me Down'...The acapella 'Room above the Club' is heart-rending; 'Last Harbour' & the painful 'Kathleen' even more so. 'Outside this Bar' reminds me of Denis Johnson's 'Resucitation of a Hanged Man'...My fave songs here- & up there with the best- are the 'Firefly' & 'Western Sky' (both from the 3rd album). The former is enchanting poetry, inviting us to mutual self destruction & the most romantic painful of love's: "Come on Beautiful...". The latter is a Californian take on Nick Drake's 'Northern Sky' & is campfire music for those lost in a darkness ("Please don't cry"). Eitzel sounds like he's crying & apologises frequently. My favourite song here is 'Gary's Song'- which captures the happysad melancholy of males drinking together. Apparently Gary was really called Frank. Whatever, a fave that reminds me of people & places around the time this was recorded.

Oh, it's all black & blue stuff. But that voice. Those words. These songs. The feeling...this is an album that everyone should own. It is one of the few albums which is improved by its imperfections. These are songs of love....

5.0 out of 5 stars Why can't I do this!, 12 Jul 2000
He comes across as a nice guy, with just an acoustic guitar and a fist full of perfect tunes, pouring his heart out to a small group of people, singing about situations we either know, think we know or think that we want to know about! That it is live means there is none of the studio effects that I think have let down some AMC releases - personal opinion! - just simple and beautiful songs. Difficult to argue which are the best songs, but there are certainly none that will disappoint! If I could be as bold, I would place this as a worthy companion to any Nick Drake LP - and that is high praise...

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm tiring of Drake comparisions that aren't there., 8 Aug 2006
By Mr. A. Ghosh "g'hd" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After the two glowing reviews here, I felt I'd uncovered a gem.

Ouch.

Mark Eitzel's voice is overconfident, lyrics poor and guitar playing unimaginative.

He fetches Nick Drake comparisions purely because of his original guitar tunings. These aren't grounds for any sort of comparision at all.

The lone troubador strumming his guitar and singing soulfully has been done to death since the folk revival in the 60s. If you'd like to hear this sort of thing done extremely well, look at John Martyn's solo live recordings with Danny Thompson. Or Bert Jansch's River Sessions.

Eitzel's AMC recordings far outshine this effort. He is not a solo artist.
