5.0 out of 5 stars Jessica Rabbit plays with jazz, 10 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This is not music to dance to, or drive to, or play in lifts. This is a CD that demands your full attention. Lie down, relax and listen without interruptions.
The lyrics are strange, Kubla Khan surreal, often with a water theme (true also for Elysian Fields' other album, Queen of the Meadow). But you've not bought the CD to analyse the lyrics, you're here because of the voice singing them.
Jennifer Charles' voice is a secret whispered in your ear, honey dripping off a spoon, a soft sleepy murmur. The same quality you find in Fiona Apple's cover of "across the universe". A voice that reminds you of Jessica 'who framed Roger' Rabbit saying, "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way."
Eastern instruments in "off or out" provide a surprise. Otherwise the album has a jazz feel to it with piano and bass, especially on "Anything you like", but it isn't a jazz album. It has moved on into something else.
I've been playing the CD constantly since I bought it a few weeks ago.
