The singing of St. John's on this CD is as much joy as the music itself, all of which is sung in either German or Latin. The organ does sound a little recessed when compared to CDs from other sources (however shameful it would be to cover up the fine singing!). Predictably, the men use a darker timbre with more vibrato than their college neighbors, giving the music a masculinity that really seems appropriate. The brightness of the boys suit the brightness of the music, their phrasing and intonation as immaculate as the finest. Some people may find Christopher Robinson a cold interpreter; he is not over-sentimental in the popular "O for the wings of a Dove" or "Ave Maria." There is something refreshing about this approach; it lets this great music speak for itself.
