Hynninen really gets to me. I don't know a more charismatic baritone. Volume, phrasing, control, emotional impact without sappiness or added drama. It's all there, and it's all on an outrageously high level.
This recording of Sibelius' orchestral songs leaves out the mystical "Luonnotar", focusing on more romantic song-like Lieder mostly in Swedish, but also in German and Finnish. Many would make this five stars, I am sure. It's just that I personally like female voices over male, and that some of my personal favorites (the more outspokenly Finnish songs) are missing from the material, and even though the included more European-style works are fine, I find them less captivating.
The booklet offers a few pages of information on the recorded material and the performers, and gives all the lyrics alongside with an English translation.
The recording by Ondine is very good.
