Product Description

CD Description

Released after Bernstein's suicide, PRISON is the picture of a post-modern Beat poet finally making his first recorded mark just as a new generation of spoken-word artists (MaggieEstep et al.) started to emerge. Pieces like "Morning In The Sub-Basement Of Hell" are expectedly dark and depressed, with a William Burroughs-like flair for the surreal. But whatdistinguishes PRISON is its modern-seeming air of slacker apathy, and the collaboration with noted producer and experimental noisemaker Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Beat Happening). But it's on solo tracks like "Face", where it's just Bernstein eviscerating his appearance and matter-of-factly outlining hisself-esteem issues, that he sounds most truly liberated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, 27 Jan 2004
This album is the poetry of Stephen Jesse Bernstein put to music by Steve Fisk. Berstein took his won life before the album was completed and it was released posthumously. I feel it stands as a fitting testimony to his (little known) work. His delivery is similar to Burroughs' - but is a spoon less cough syrup and a couple mouthfuls more vinegar. If you check the audio samples you'll see what I mean. What makes it this album so special, however, is the production by Fisk. It's very hard to describe, but it fits the tone of Bernstein's voice perfectly - the nearest reference might be El-P's (ex-Company Flow) recent production, with a little more Throbbing Gristle thrown into the mix. This isn't an easy listen, but it's hard to imagine a more compelling one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, compelling, 8 Feb 2009
If the idea of poetry read over a musical background doesn't excite you (and it probably shouldn't, if you've heard most poetry reading),you haven't heard this. Bernstein's stuff frankly wouldn't impress me much on paper, but delivered with perfect phrasing in his inimitable bitter snarl, over a background of dirty urban funky instrumentals, it's unforgettable; these words just don't belong on paper. I'd go as far as to suggest that fans of Captain Beefheart (maybe even The Fall?) might find the sheer torrential ranting on offer here (especially in The Sport) congenial. Get a copy of this rare disc while you can.
