CD Description
Released after Bernstein's suicide, PRISON is the picture of a post-modern Beat poet finally making his first recorded mark just as a new generation of spoken-word artists (MaggieEstep et al.) started to emerge. Pieces like "Morning In The Sub-Basement Of Hell" are expectedly dark and depressed, with a William Burroughs-like flair for the surreal. But whatdistinguishes PRISON is its modern-seeming air of slacker apathy, and the collaboration with noted producer and experimental noisemaker Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Beat Happening). But it's on solo tracks like "Face", where it's just Bernstein eviscerating his appearance and matter-of-factly outlining hisself-esteem issues, that he sounds most truly liberated.
