5.0 out of 5 stars 30 years on still the best, 17 Aug 2005
This soundtrack above all others brought my attention to listening to the music in films and not just a backing to the main event. The overture leading up to the main theme and the theme itself still takes my breath away 30 years on. The nearest I have come to equalling it since, has been James Horner's music from Legends Of The Fall.
I bought the original album in 1963, and the single CD ten years ago. Although there is some repetition on this double CD I HIGHLY recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An epic score for an epic film, 15 Jul 2009
By Roger (Colchester) - See all my reviews
Alfred Newman was a very notable film composer, and if you like film music you'll probably be familiar with his work. Many also just love music from `westerns' but this double CD album is a bonus in that the music covers a wide range of styles.

If you owned the album originally released as a 12" LP in the 1960s, note that this is the original soundtrack. Consequently, you get the full main title music for instance, not the previous cut-down recording, and indeed virtually all the music from the film is present and intact. You will have your favourites tracks but noteworthy are the Overture, Main Title, Climb a Higher Hill, and the dramatic End Titles. I personally don't like the songs, introduced into the film purely for alleged audience-appeal, but they don't detract too much. There is also a range of additional tracks, either different versions or unused music.

Well worth getting if you like this sort of music - an epic score for an epic film.
