Amazon.co.uk Review

This collection offers a diverse cross-section of Richard Addinsell's finest work for British films. Naturally, the "Warsaw Concerto," written originally for the 1940 film Dangerous Moonlight, is here in all of its glory. The eloquent main theme, with its intentional debt to Rachmaninov (and performed with grace and elegance by soloist Martin Jones), has never sounded more pure or throat-catching. Addinsell's remarkable ability to evoke the darkness of World War Two is also represented by his scores for The Day Will Dawn (1942) and The Lion Has Wings (1939). The composer's work with high-profile directors is accounted for, most notably through his classy scores for David Lean's Blithe Spirit (1945) and Alfred Hitchcock's Under Capricorn (1949). But the highpoint of the collection is the 20-minute suite from Lewis Gilbert's The Greengage Summer (1961). Addinsell's portrait of the champagne countryside of France is both expansive and evocative. All in all, this idiomatically performed collection is a worthy tribute to an undervalued composer. (A second volume of Addinsell film scores has also been released by the same team). --Kevin Mulhall
