5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, beautifully played, 5 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This was one of the earliest CDs I ever bought, when it was first issued in the mid-eighties. 15 years on, it's been played over and over again, but I still love it as much as I did then. I think it's because of the sense of joy which comes across in the playing.

Emma Johnson's reading of the Clarinet Concerto is compelling and William Bennett and Osian Ellis give a very stylish performance of the Flute and Harp Concerto.

In all, a very attractive CD featuring three of our top soloists.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pippa Passes experience, 22 Feb 2009
By Susila (Cyprus, Norway) - See all my reviews
Forgive me for waxing lyrical... but this is a glorious CD, due in large part to the joyous performance of Emma Johnson. With this rendition of Mozart's clarinet concerto I really felt: here is someone who's thinking as she plays `Isn't life wonderful? And isn't this music just great fun?' It's enough to envy the members of the English Chamber Orchestra who played together with her. It must, quite simply, have been FUN.

Mind you, the Concerto for Harp, Flute and Orchestra is also beautifully played, light and melodious (I can't fathom that Mozart said he disliked composing for the flute)... but Emma Johnson's performance on the clarinet is an exceptional experience: all is indeed right with the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class!, 27 Dec 2005
By Mr. Richard P. Scott - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Emma Johnson was voted Britain's ''Young Musician of the Year'' in 1984, and she is still only 18. Many TV viewers will remember her making a virtually unknown concerto by Crusell sound irresistibly witty, and surprisingly she does the same to the finale of the Mozart Concerto which, at an unusually fast tempo, has a giocoso quality that is both novel and enchanting. She also manages the very soft phrases in the slow movement most beautifully, and quite rightly she adds miniature cadenzas at the pause marks. Not all do. If there are any faint traces of insecurity, I hope that in ironing them out she doesn't lose the youthful freshness that makes her playing so unusually pleasing. Her virtuosity is a wonder too, and she is most sensitively supported by the orchestra.
