5.0 out of 5 stars Some familiar and some unusual items - all beautifully performed, 12 Jul 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I adore this recording, not only for its gutsy Winchester sound under David Hill, with great organ playing from Stephen Farr & Christopher Monks, but also the choice of music.

Framed by the Morning & Evening Services in B flat (familiar to anyone with a slight interest in what is known as 'cathedral music'), the great Evening Service in A is given a masterful treatment, and the organ playing much equals that of the orchestral version; he three latin motets are given sensitive readings, although I rather suspected my roof would disappear during Coelos; and then we have the rather more 'unknowns'.

The Evening Service in F is a fairly decent composition (all the performances on this disc date from the first 'third' of Stanford's output), and the anthems are given non-less masterly treatments. I became quite a fan of the Pater noster, and The Lord is my shepherd remains among my favourite anthems.

The highlight for me on this disc is the Evening Service in E flat - Stanford's first attempt at the evening canticles. Well - whilst one could deride them for being slightly Gilbert & Sullivan, they actually have (particularly in the Gloria, which is repeated for both) a really rather complex harmonic structure, which doesn't detract from the 'fun' of the performance.

A must have for those who like Stanford's choral music.
