5.0 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Recital, 3 Nov 2009
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
"...Alkan's Beethoven is unquestioningly Alkanesque: the personality, thrust and texture, the peculiar Franco-German synthesis, cannot be the work of anyone else. When the music blazes into C majorfortissimo with a maggiore version of the Concerto's opening subject thundered out in the left hand, counterpointed against the marcia finale of the Fifth Symphony a trinity of octaves away in the right, the effect is cataclysmic, the audacity belief-defying..." says the booklet commentary.

The same can be said about this phenomenal recital itself. It is hard to believe Hamelin plays these fiendishly difficult works with apparent ease and cool perfection. Even in the deeply Romantic stranscription of Chopin's Concerto, pianist's playing shows little sign of sentimentalism, but pristine beauty. I would miss some dose of Horowitzian abandon in Alkan's three etudes and Busoni's Carmen Sonata, but it seems, Hamelin is not interested in virtuosic showmanship, yet his austere and disciplined pianism captures the transcendental spirit of the music masterfully. Total playing time, 71'56. Beautifully recorded with virtually no cough or noise from the audiences except ecstatic applause.
