2.0 out of 5 stars Weber given the barnstorming treatment, 16 Oct 2002
A disappointing addition to Hyperion's otherwise outstanding series of Romantic piano concertos. Nikolai Demidenko tackles these concertos like an athlete attempting to beat a world speed record. The tempi adopted in the outer movements of both concertos are drastically fast. The listener is left in no doubt of Mr Demidenko's virtuosity, but unfortunately at the expense of the music's poetry, humour and delicacy. These latter qualities, as well as the required virtuosity, are amply demonstrated by the English pianist Benjamin Frith on an inexpensive Naxos recording, which is not only better recorded than the Hyperion release, but contains more music.
