5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music, 25 Sep 2007
By George Sdraulig (Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is really fantastic 20th century music. Simpson was a composer whose music tends to get neglected because it was considered too classical for very modern, experimental composers and too dissonant for the more conservative composers.

Admittedly this music can be challenging. Lazy, uninspired listeners may describe this music as dull, average or oppressive. Yet these listeners have quite obviously missed the point, and the only way you can fully appreciate Robert Simpson is by giving the music several listenings, not just one. This is what I love about Simpson's music; it grows on you consistently and each listening gives you something new.

This disc would make an excellent starting point for his symphonies, alongside the Ninth Symphony, which is a masterpiece in every way.

Symphony No.3 is considered his most popular and performed work today and, whilst it may not display all his musical capabilities, is a work of high stature and deserves to be performed world-wide. The dissonant, sonata-allegro opening movement is given a tremendous performance here, as is the well-known and exciting second movement with its gigantic accelerando and charmingly memorable motives. Vernon Handley is fully dedicated to the score, as is his superb orchestra.

The combative, exhilarating Symphony No.5 is even better. Its enigmatic, motionless chord at the beginning is interrupted by a tremendous outburst from the orchestra of Beethovenian energy and cumulative power. There is a short break of rest in Canone 1 before a fiery, memorable and violent central scherzino rips in (ironically, Simpson was a pacifist). The second Canone is one of the most disturbed and mysterious movements Simpson wrote, and leads into a outstanding finale of thrilling energy, reminiscent of the opening movement.

Strongly recommended for all who want to hear the best of 20th century music.

5.0 out of 5 stars These two works are intense especially the 4th symphony, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
Both works literally crackle with emotion but the 4th symphony is in a league of its own when it comes to dramatic expression. No one loves the brass more then this composer. The last movement of the 4th is particularly violent yet still very melodic. Simpson sounds modern is modern but still you can hear the tradition of great symphonists of the past in all his works. The second two is a well written a serious work. This recording would be a bargain at twice the price. If you want to explore a composer whose work has been to long neglected I highly reccommend this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average music, 20 Jan 2002
By A Customer
When his music finally appeared in croatian market I was so happy because at last I had an opportunity to hear his so much praised music. There is nothing special in those works. Overblown and loud with very good structure, but structure is not enough. Do not get me wrong, I love modern music. Performances, presentation and recordings are splendid. Problem is average music.
