This was one of the first in Hyperion's series of Romantic Piano Concertos and I am surprised nobody else has reviewed it. It is an excellent disc. Balakirev's 1st concerto is tuneful and entertaining but it is so influenced by Chopin as to be virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. The 2nd concerto, which was completed by Lyapunov after Balakirev's death, is a splendid work. It has a real feeling of organic growth rare in Russian music of this period being built on catchy short tunes which go off in all sorts of different directions. The finale in particular is a winner, its third tune being absolutely indelible. Even the linking semiquaver material in this movement will haunt you!
In recording quality and performance this disc is greatly superior to a rival Naxos issue and it has the further advantage of including Rimsky-Korsakov's concerto and not Balakirev's "Grande Fantaisie on Russian Folksongs", a disappointing work overburdened by arpeggios and without the riproaring finale a piece like this needs. ( Try Lyapunov's scintillating "Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes" played by Hamish Milne on another Hyperion disc to hear a superb piece of this type.)
