Although Arensky is the better known composer the chief attraction of this coupling is the Bortkiewicz piano concerto. It's opening is deceptively gentle but it soon builds into one of the lushest of romantic barnstormers with an insidiously memorable main theme. If you have a soft spot for, say, Rachmaninov's second, or Rachmaninov pastiches like the Warsaw Concerto and the Dream of Olwen, then you'll love the Bortkiewicz. Performance and recording are both excellent.
