I bought this disc of majestic Handel music played by Robert King and his Consort, largely because of the presence of James Bowman and Gillian Fisher, together with King stalwarts John Mark Ainsley and Michael George. All have played major roles in King's Handel oratorio cycle.

Whilst the Queen Caroline Te Deum and his Sing Unto God were both known to me, and here receive highly muscial accounts, it was the Birthday Ode for Queen Anne I was looking forward to hearing. There are, to my knowledge, only three recordings of this in existence. One by the late great Alfred Deller, and a more recent and well-regarded recent one by Robin Blaze and Kings College Cambridge. Here we have a ravishing James Bowman in the opening trumpet arioso Eternal Source of Light Divine ... great melismas and interplay with the ubiquitous Crispian Steele-Perkins in sumptuous form. Even if you don't listen to the rest of the CD, listen to the first movement and you will be transfixed by the beauty of Handel's writing - and it may not even have been performed in Handel's own lifetime - astonishing !

For a feast of lesser known early Handel works, look no further than this marvellous CD. The soloists are all excellent and the orchestral playing, as in all Robert King's Handel interpretations, is simply wonderful. This is easily one of my favourite CDs; there are so many tunes that you simply cannot help singing along with or humming to yourself throughout the day. If you love Handel's music, buy this CD - you will not be disappointed.
