3.0 out of 5 stars a fine recording marred by the recording engineers, 19 Feb 2009
By Dr. T. Hanly "tommytantrum" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
this is a fine recording in many senses. the corydon singers make a lovely sound throughout although at times i wondered if the sound was too english. i had to remind myself that i wasn't listening to howells. the soloists are fine too. ann murray has a lovely depth of dark colour to her voice and the pie jesu is very movingly rendered (i have some reservation about the big vibrato at times, perhaps slightly too operatic for my tastes and less suited in my view to the work. the agnus die is a real winner the string playing from ECO has a lovely radiant quality. lux aeterna is dragging in tempo especially the organ intro and this bit is much lovelier when given to woodwind (no reflection on trotter's fine playing). the ending is sublime!!!!

didn't know the motets...what a lovely surprise...will be making a suggestion to our choir master re future repetoire

my biggest problem of all and probably why i couldn't recommend this recording whole heartedly is a question of dynamics and the manner of recording. the work sounds very distant to me in the opening and it fails to engage from the start as a result. if i listen to it on stereo rather than through headphones i find myself constantly having to adjust the volume. i bought it on the strength of a gramophone recommendation and i'm so dissappointed with the recording balance.
