This set contains the three large scale masses that Bruckner composed, the Te Deum, a psalm setting, a Libera me and two short works for a trio of trombones. Bruckner counts, along with Bach, Palestrina and Schubert as among the best setters of religous texts. He draws on tradition (most obviously Palestrina) and also looks to then current trends in music as far as scale and ambition goes. Despite their large proportions there is no loss of lyrical delicacy.
The three great Bruckner masses are constructed on an epic scale and need a conductor with a firm grip on architecture and an eye for detail if they are to succeed. Matthew Best has no problems on those scores and these versions are amongst the best in the catalogue. Everything about this set is right. The soloists shine, the chorus is on top form, the accompaniment is tight and the whole thing hangs together just perfectly.
The Te Deum is, if anything, even better than the Masses. Everything from the scale and architecture to the phrasing is spot on. It is no wonder that this got such glowing reviews when it was originally released.
If I have a gripe, it is that this set only contains the major masses. I would have preferred a complete set with, for example, the Missa Solemnis which is rarely heard let alone recorded.
But that is a minor issue, particulary in the face of such superlative performances. And the set comes at such a reasonable price too.
