Amazon.co.uk Review
Recorded amid the emotional chaos of his early-1970s booze bender and his temporary separation from Yoko Ono, Mind Games is a patchy but pleasing record that can't live with the best of Lennon, but does stand as one of his more worthwhile solo albums. Sprawling and undisciplined, it features much filler but a few genuinely great songs--most notably the massive, Oasis-humbling title track. Despite its archaic pothead imagery of "a million mind guerillas putting their shoulder to the karmic wheel", it's an instantly recognisable classic, powered by the same naked emotion as all the man's best music. The rest of Mind Games is inevitably overshadowed, but it is a superior Lennon solo album, and generally underrated. --Taylor Parkes

Description
On this disc, Lennon tackles his usual messages including love (of Yoko and mankind in general), peppy optimism in the face of dire circumstances, and humorous observations of crazy times and conditions. The breadth of his interests has always been gargantuan, and somehow when Lennon switches between the global focus of the title track to the personal "Yoko(I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, Yoko)", he convinces us that these sentiments are not all that far apart. The playful, sexy "Tight As" is a jaunty rockabilly number reminding us that Lennon knows where he comes from.
On "One Day At A Time", a love song with nursery rhyme metaphors, Lennon's silvery falsetto, usually featured in Beatle background vocals, takes thelead and is truly heart-wrenching. The surreal, country dream pop of "You Are Here", with its steel guitars and leisurely tempo, pre-dates the luxurious kd lang/Ben Mink approach. To resist chanting along with the chorus on "Bring On The Lucie (Freeda Peeple)" would be near impossible--it is as infectious as it is politically correct. Special kudos to Gordon Edwards, whose sure and melodic bass playing could turn Paul McCartney's head.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give this pearler of an album a chance !!, 13 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Mind Games is often reffered to as one of Lennon's worst albums, a by the numbers cop out, but I strongly disagree with this and urge you to give this album a chance. It was recorderd prior to the epic emotional turmoil ridden 'Walls and Bridges' and though much of the album lacks the polish one expects of Lennon, some tracks really sparkle. The title track you don't need me to tell you about. Track 3 'Aisumasen' is a wonderfully soulful lament to Lennon's soon to be temporarily estranged wife. 'Bring On The Lucie' is a peace and freedom song fit to rank with his finest and is the basis of The Charlatans 'Just When You're Thinking Things Over'. 'Out The Blue' resembling 'Sexy Sadie' in places would have been better with a little more time spent on it but is still bluesy lyrical celebration of the love he feels for Yoko. Finally comes 'I Know', in my view the finest song on the album. I bought Mind Games for this song alone and urge you to do the same. The Audio quality on the album is poor thanks to early 90's remastering techniques and it just begs to be given some of the digital remastery Lennon's more famous albums got. As an album in it's entirety Mind Games is probably around a 2 or 3 star but on it's highlights alone I give it 4 stars. It's mid-priced so buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Greatest, 5 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This is the album which tends to get the most scathing reviews of John Lennon's solo work apart from 'Sometime in New York City.' However, it's certainly not as bad as it is sometimes made out to be (though I concede it is nowhere as good as 'Plastic Ono Band' or 'Walls and Bridges').

The title track is as good as any of Lennon's classic songs, being as good as (if not better) than 'Imagine'. It is lyrically breathtaking, while musically invigourating.

Lennon also writes some good songs without them ever scaling heights of the title track; never classics but better than most songs in the charts at the moment. These include: 'Aisumasen'; 'One Day'; 'Out the Blue'; and 'You Are Here'. Songs like these tend to be more of a romantic nature directed towards Yoko - forming more of a basis for this album than any of Lennon's others.

Then there are some weak tracks (though listenable) which owe to the album's bad reputation such as 'Intuition' and 'Bring on the Lucie'; the latter's chorus being hardly the most intellectually stimulating, Lennon's worst along with that of 'John Sinclair' from the 'Sometime in New York City' album.

Overall, the album is far from Lennon's best, though it certainly does not deserve the harsh criticism levelled towards it by many. Perhaps the reason for it not being as good as Lennon's others is his over-involvement in politics with Jerry Rubin at the time - testified by the 'Nutopian International Anthem'. It was certainly not through any loss of abilty with the brilliant 'Walls and Bridges' album being released only two years later.
