Amazon.co.uk Review

Just not made for these times? Then this four-disc monument to the most innocent, blissfully melodic, California-dreamin' album of the rock era beats Prozac hands down. A staggering labour of love on the part of executive project director Phil Sandhaus and his fellow disciples, this lets us ponder the sine qua non of Brian Wilson's career from every imaginable angle--stereo, mono, instrumental and celestial vocals-only versions included. It's way too much of a good thing, but any album that can profoundly influence such disparate talents as Paul McCartney, XTC's Andy Partrige and ex-Pixie FrankBlack warrants microscopic analysis. Our advice: don't worry baby, just drift away on a Brian Wilson fantasia from an epoch when the drugs still worked and before the delirium tremors set in. --Jeff Bateman

CD Description

When it comes to landmark albums, it's hard to beat the Beach Boys 1966 masterwork, PET SOUNDS. Not only was it the direct inspiration for the following year's SGT. PEPPER, and for countless other works by '60s psychedelic groups; its influence was strong enough more than three decades after its release to warrant this 4-disc box set. In the nineties, the orchestral pop of acts such as Eric Matthews, The High Llamasand Epic Soundtracks owed its brass to Brian Wilson's brainchild.
Over the course of four jam-packed discs, PET SOUNDS SESSIONS offers vocal-only and instrumental-only mixes ofall the original tracks. In additional to the familiar version of the album, there are also alternate performances as well as alternate and mono mixes, working versions sketched out in the studio, and songs that never made it onto the original release. The box comes with a lavish book filled with photos and inside info on the sessions. This set provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of pop music's most innovative minds, and the process by which he and his bandmates made musical history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Masterpiece, 18 Jan 2002
I bought this set on the basis of all I had heard about Pet Sounds, for me as a musician this turned out to be a life changing experience. I can only describe what I felt after listening to this album as a re-discovery of music. Brian Wilson is surely touched by the hand of god. A true master piece and a tribute to the spirit of mankind. -- Leslie Black

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius in a Box (Part 2), 4 Feb 2001

If you love Pet Sounds then buy this box set. It is absolutely staggering. I owned the "artificial" (Duophonic) stereo version of the album on CD for many years and this is a totally new experience. The sound quality and stereo imagery is fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius In A Box, 18 Jan 2001
By A Customer
When Pet Sounds was released in 1966, The Beatles, Paul McCartney in particular, were so flabbergasted at the sheer magical lustre within 12 inches of vinyl, they were compelled to knock out Sergeant Pepper just to try and even what Brian Wilson had seemingly conjured from thin air.

Pet Sounds still has an otherworldliness to it - it could have been made any time in the last thousand years - and is regarded by many to be the greatest album ever made. No surfing songs on here, this is, as Brian himself described it, a teenage symphony to God.

So to hear Wilson in the studio creating his magnum opus is akin to peering over Leonardo De Vinci's shoulder and observing his brush strokes. This is history in the making.

Brian suffered terribly throughout the production of this album. Ill health, deafness and insecurity meant that while the rest of The Beach Boys were touring, he remained at his home with only his beloved piano for company. When the group returned, Brian had composed, produced, arranged and recorded all the backing tracks for the new album and had merely waited for the boys to record the vocals. Some people have all the luck...

The album was originally mixed and released in mono but for the first time it can be heard on this box set in digitally remastered stereo. Remember when Dorothy opens the door in the Wizard Of Oz and everything turns from monochrome into exquisite technicolour? Prepare to be similarly sonically embraced!

The beauty of the music, the angst of the touching lyrics and the surreal ambience of Pet Sounds in super stereo can only be described as breathtaking. Close your eyes and let the Wilsons do the rest!

With two extensive booklets and out-takes galore this set is probably the most important documentation of recording sessions ever produced and, whether you're a Beach Boys fan or not, it is a beautifully packaged collection that you will treasure forever.

Still not convinced? This dumps on Sergeant Pepper from a great height and I'm a Beatles fan!
