David Munrow made his reputation largely through his upbeat instrumental recordings and historical soundtracks. Toward the end of his all-too-short lifetime, he turned more toward larger collections aimed at a specific period or area, and produced such masterpieces as "The Art of Courtly Love" and "Music of the Gothic Era." Possibly the best of these efforts is "The Art of the Netherlands."

This collection is largely vocal, with instruments providing support to some of the best voices of the era (the 1970's, that is, not the 16th century). The music is ravishing, and performed with subtlety and feeling. Secular and sacred music are represented, with one CD devoted to each. A complete Mass is included on the second CD, but with a twist: each movement is from a different composer.

Veritas has done a good job with the remastering of the originals. My LP copy of this album (on Angel/Seraphim) seems to have been pressed on someone's old plastic dinner plates, so it is a pleasure to hear the music without all the noise of the original.

My only complaint with this release is that LP one side from the original release, made up of purely instrumental music, has been cut from the re-release in order to fit it all on 2 CDs. That means that anyone wishing to hear these gems will have to track down an original LP set.
