5.0 out of 5 stars Buried treasure, 6 April 2003
By A Customer
In this cheap little box lies buried treasure . These performances graced many a home throughout the 50s ,60s and 70s when Menuhin was at the height of his renown . Since then especially in the 1980s revisionists have made cutting remarks about his intonation and supposed edgy tone .

Ignore them. Although Menuhin's mono performances of the Beethoven with Furtwangler are better ,this Silvestri conducted recording from 1960 has a serene beauty . The Mozart is stylish and involving .

The Mendelssohn and Bruch coupling that was on full price for over 20 years on LP remains a true classic of the gramophone .

The crowning glory though and worth the price of the whole set is the Brahms. Menuhin is on terrific form and the accompaniment by Kempe with the Berlin Philharmonic is a thing of wonder . Despite the siren voices of many other great performances this is the best of all .

There is tremendous excitement and passion in the first movement. The slow movement is quite magical and the gypsy rhythms dance and sing in the finale like nowhere else .

Turn it up loud and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars real music-making with one absolute gem, 3 Jan 2007
By Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane "almac1975" (Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I agree with 'a music fan' almost entirely - except to say that the 'revisionists' were quite right ; Menuhin was, sadly, capable sometimes of very edgy bowing and thin tone, and there are some recorded performances on CD and DVD that suffer from that. This very inexpensive set, however, can be greeted almost without qualification. I find his Mozart a little cumbersome and heavy, but nearly everything else is very enjoyable and often outstanding. I remember the Brahms being chosen as 'best performance' by BBC's Record Review (now CD Review) way, way back - in the 60s or early 70s - and it is a terrific performance, full of wild passion and lyricism and very well supported by Kempe and the BPO. You know from the violinist's first entry, throwing everything to the wind, that it is going to be special. The Bruch and Mendelssohn are famous and have sold very very well over the years - and they deserved to - and the Bach is deeply felt though, again, rather heavy to my ears. But this is a fine set showing one of the iconic violinists of the 20th. century at or near top form.
