This is a strong recording.
At this price there is only one other Tosca recording of such quality and that is the remarkable Davis set with Carreras and Caballe.
Domingo is a very good Cavaradossi, in his prime, about equal to Carreras, although Carreras has more charm, reminiscent of di Stefano on the de Sabata recording with Callas.
Scotto proves to be a more dramatic Tosca than Caballe, but Caballe sounds somewhat fresher.
The Scarpia on the Davis set is Ingvar Wixell, on the Levine set the Scarpia is Renato Bruson. I like Bruson more than Wixell, his voice is less grainy and sounds more Italian.
Although the casting is a little more luxurious on the Davis set the Levine set sounds equally rounded, if a little less characterful.
The conducting is better on the Davis set, if a little cool, the Levine set is more dramatic.
There is not much space between the sets, it is really down to personal preference which you choose. If you choose this set you will not be disappointed.
