5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!, 26 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Despite their age, these are amongst the best recordings of Brahms' symphonies I have heard. The First, recorded in Vienna is mesmerising, and the Third is highly impressive and having heard it, one can agree entirely with the assertion that Furtwängler's interpretation of this symphony is unmatched.

The sound quality is good, and even though the symphonies were all recorded live there is surprisingly little audience noise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing antidote, 20 April 2002
By A Customer
Brahms symphonies are now commonly played by chamber orchestras with crisp tempi - Berglund, Mackerras and Harnoncourt's recent cycles come to mind .

How refreshing therefore to come across an antidote to such bland performances . These Furtwangler recordings whether live or studio made are quite simply the best in the catalogue , impassioned spiritual edge of your seat stuff . Together with Toscanini's wonderful Royal Festival Hall performances which could not be more different these recordings remind you just what great music this is .

3.0 out of 5 stars "Definitive" may not be the best choice for you, 17 Mar 2005
By James MacAonghus (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This series of recordings conducted by Furtwängler is supposed to be "definitive". I would suggest taking this with a pinch of salt. For me, only the composer can say what is definitive, and he is usually dead. Everything else is subjective, so you should choose what you are going to like, definitive or not. "Definitive" used so often sounds like you will love this recording, whereas you may not. I did not.

It is difficult to choose classical CDs when you cannot hear them in advance (the 30 second excerpts don't always help). For example, these Furtwängler performances date back to a long time ago (~1950s). Which means that, regardless of the quality of the interpretation, the sound has that saccharined sound of old records, as with original tracks to movies like Walt Disney's Snow White. Aside from that, I don't like the version of Brahms 3, which is what I bought the CD for. It is too quick and light-hearted for me. I am not saying this is a bad recording, but the praise heaped on it suggests that you cannot go wrong here, and you can.
