This thirty year old recording by the young Domingo and Milnes unveiled to the world the genius of a work written in 1845, when Verdi was only 31. For fans of later Verdi works, the father-daughter duets between Milnes and Caballe (in one of her best performances) will prove an interesting comparison to the father-daughter relationships in 'Traviata', 'Boccanegra' and Aida'. I can guarantee that anyone with a remote interest in Verdi will adore this set, with its inspired conducting and spirited playing from the LSO. Don't be put off by the fact that the opera is rarely performed - the music is siublime. I bought it when I was fourteen (now eighteen) and have since been addicted to Verdi's early works. This is one of the best available, however, because of the lavish casting. Perhaps one or two of the minor singers could have been in better voice, but with Domingo, Caballe and Milnes shining in their arias, duets and trios, who can complain?

Written in 1845, Giovanna is an early masterpiece, written two years before Macbeth. Verdi's genious is very much in evidence here and the opera is very enjoyable. Caballe sings with a splendour of tone that will ravish the ears, and she fulfils the considerable technical demands of the role to the full. Domingo is in fine voice, as is Milnes as Carlo VII. Levine conducts splendidly and the recording, a touch bassy, is otherwise superb. Though not one of Verdi's more familiar operas, there is plenty to enjoy here: great choruses, beautiful solos and lots of drama. Well worth hearing.

Levine isn't the most ideal of Verdian conductors but anyway delivers a most valid performance. Hailed by a young Domingo, the cast is superb. Caballe' sings difficult coloratura with a strong tone unified throughout and with soaring pianissimo high notes. The chorus is breath-taking especially in the coronation ensemble (which echoes the Act-of-faith Scene in Verdi's later opera Don Carlo). Verdi's ending to the story is different from the historical one but the witchcraft that Joan of Arc was attributed to in her life, that led to her martyrdom, is reflected in some beautiful "wicked" music.
