This is not an opera to relax to after a hard day at work; this is not an opera to have on as background music. This is an opera that demands your attention, but, if your prepared to make a commitment to it, will repay you in spades. In essence, the story of a bored merchant's wife who begins an affair with one of her husband's serfs, the plot escalates to a climax of murderous despair. So far, so sordid; but Shostakovich's incredible use of the orchestra turns this into an electrifying, almost visceral experience. This recording could hardly be bettered: it is conducted by the composer's protege, Rostropovich, whose wife, Vishnevksya, sings the role of Katerina. Nicolai Gedda shows his versatility as her backdoor man, and Dmeter Petkov is her boorish, intimidating father-in-law. Not a default choice of opera, but if you're in the right mood, it will entertain you like nothing else.
