Product Description

CD Description
Though he was only 22 years old when he died in a plane crash, Buddy Holly's fusion of C&W, folk and blues contributed immeasurably to the rock'n'roll explosion of the 1950s. NOT FADE AWAY admirably brings together country and rock artiststo commemorate the 37th anniversary of Holly's death. Many facets of Holly's musical career are included as part of this tribute album. The original Crickets join Nanci Griffith on "Well...All Right" and The Band on a rollicking "Not Fade Away". Crickets bassist Waylon Jennings wraps his quavering vocals around "Learning The Game" accompanied by Mark Knopfler's ethereal guitar. Through the wonders of modern technology, Buddy himself joins his namesakes The Hollies (includingGraham Nash for the first time since 1968) on "Peggy Sue Got Married", giving it a contemporary feel without tampering with the soul of the song.
Other highlights include the Mavericks' Raul Malo's aching Orbison-like inflection on "True Love Ways", and Los Lobos' ominous reading of "Midnight Shift", which reveals a darker side to Holly's song writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Buddy Holly fans, 27 Nov 1999
By A Customer
A superb compilation from an eclectic bunch of stars of today and yesterday. Where, on one album, can you find the Hollies singing with Buddy Holly's original voice track cheek by jowl with the Mavericks, the Band, Nanci Griffith and the Crickets, Emmylou? And just listen to Mark Knopfler's guitar wonderful guitar piece on "Learning the Game". Magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy will never fade away, 21 Mar 2003

Sixties group The Hollies named themselves after him and they open this set with a remix of Buddy’s original version of Peggy Sue got married. Modern recording technology is amazing, but I admit that I would have preferred the Hollies to do their own version rather than mix their vocals with Buddy’s.

The remaining recordings were all (as far as I know) completely new for this album and feature a mix of rock and country performers. Buddy’s former band, The Crickets, lend their support to Nanci Griffith on Well all right and to The Band on Not fade away.

My favorite track here is It doesn’t matter anymore, featuring outstanding guitar picking by Dave Edmunds and brilliant singing by Suzy Bogguss. Actually, I think all the tracks are great, except Peggy Sue got married which is merely OK. You have to like both country and rock music to agree with me. If you only like one of these genres, you may only like some of the tracks here.

Despite a recording career cut short by death, Buddy’s influence on pop, rock and country music is substantial. This is a fitting tribute album, although it would have been nice to have more than twelve tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars a worthy tribute, 5 Feb 2009

Had Buddy been spared that night 50yrs. ago ,I feel certain that he would have become a force in record producing. He had already started with Waylon Jennings[See the final track ].Would he have approved of this production---you bet he would. Every artist from The Band to Nanci Griffith with Buddy's old mates The Crickets excel themselves with their interpretations and performances of Holly classics none better than said Waylon Jennings' rendition of Learning The Game aided by the genius of Mark Knopfler. I think that this album proves that Buddy's music is timeless and will be around for another 50yrs. I hope so.
