Product Description

From Amazon.com

When Jimmy Buffett eventually becomes the subject of a college course--and given his enduring popularity as a singer-songwriter and author, you know he will someday--here's what'll be on the final exam. Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads is so named because the four-CD collection divides Buffett's collected works among those categories, giving each disc a theme. From early classics such as "Biloxi" and "Come Monday" to more recent fare known only by the Parrothead cognoscenti, this set is the perfect accompaniment to a cool drink and a hammock on a summer afternoon. What kind of cool drink? Well, that'll be on the final, too. --Daniel Durchholz

CD Description

With sell-out concerts year after year and an empire incorporating everything from best-selling books to a restaurant chain, singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett transformed himself anicon of laid-back, island-dwelling eccentricity. Buffett revels in the world of life's merry dropouts, of beach bums, sailors, barflies, nomads, and minstrels. His box set, BOATS,BEACHES, BARS & BALLADS, cleverly divides his gargantuan catalogue into major themes, offering up four distinct discs that celebrate the subtly varied aspects of his aesthetic.
The BOATS section is dominated by more wistful songs, with occasional gusts of wind like "Changes in Latitudes, Changesin Attitudes" and an excellent cover of "On a Slow Boat to China". BEACHES starts fittingly wasted away in his Top 10 moment, "Margaritaville", and is followed by a mix of joy andpain that ends in Buffett's unforgettable novelty hit, "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Naturally, BARS is the most raucous set, peppered with rockers ("Fins"), sing-alongs ("Why Don'tWe Get Drunk"), and wistful nostalgia ("Pencil Thin Mustache"). Topping off this excellent compilation, BALLADS sums upthe oft-forgotten depth of Buffett's storytelling, opening with the extraordinary beauty of "Come Monday" and flipping through a scrapbook of quiet elegance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just music but a lifestyle option, 30 April 2001
By A Customer
'Nothing to show but this brand-new tattoo - it's a real beauty, a Mexican cutie, but how it got here I haven't a clue' So says 'Margaritaville', the national anthem of the sub-culture that is Jimmy Buffett. Buffett offers not just music but a zany, sunny, over-the-top lifestyle option. 'Boats, Beaches..'is a stunning project which chronicles the way in which this sub-culture has evolved. Buffett could have been an unknown country singer had he not discovered salt water. Basing himself in Key West, Buffett bought a yacht and cruised away to adventure in the Caribbean and far beyond. His songs record these adventures, the thrills, spills and emotions of a unique way of life. The songs become old friends that all 'parrotheads' (as JB fans are known) can never tire of hearing, each an evocation of where you were when you first heard the latest installment on the 'coconut telegraph'.The range is huge, from Caribbean-influenced partying to the philosophy that comes to you on a warm beach at twilight. But JB is never, never boring. 'Boats, beaches...' gives you a crash-course, enabling you to make up the two decades of fun that you've missed if JB has hitherto passed you by. For parrotheads and newcomers alike, it's a must.
