Half of Jimmy Buffett's career has consisted of portraying himself as the quintessential one-hit wonder. Even the titleof this greatest hits collection, SONG(S) YOU KNOW BY HEART, plays off this misperception with winking parentheses. In reality, by the time of this collection in 1985, Jimmy Buffett had recorded over 16 albums, was one of the most popular U.S. concert attractions, and had a legion of rabid fans known as Parrotheads. He had also had four Top 40 hits besides "Margaritaville", all of which, plus other fan favourites, are present here.
Buffett certainly knows how to craft an enjoyable pop song. The lyrics to "Volcano" are childish andnonsensical, and those of "Cheeseburger in Paradise" are certifiably cheeky, but both are eminently fun and hummable. "Pencil Thin Moustache", his ode to the earnestness of old black-and-white movies, is a forgotten treasure. When Buffett does get serious, he can write a flat-out beautiful song--"Come Monday", his first major hit, stands out as a highlight of the singer/songwriter era.

Jimmy Buffet's "Songs You Know By Heart" is just that. This album is a brilliantly arranged compilation of Jimmy's greatest hits, which are definantly all songs you know by heart. This album contains the very songs that made him the successful, beach-bum musician that he is. Songs You Know By Heart contains Parrot-head favorites such as "Cheeseburgers In Paradise", "Son of A Son of A Sailor", "Margarittaville", "Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude" and the all-time party classic, "Why Don't We Get Drunk". This is a great summertime CD to have by the pool or down at the beach to pass time on those hot, lazy days of summer.

I first came across the "parrot head" around the 80's while in North Carolina, introduced by a girlfriend I was captured by the simple yet meaningful tunes (cheesburger excepted) Then with my family on holiday in Florida and visiting Sea world I shocked those closest to me by jumping up and proceeded to sing & dance at the top of my voice to Volcano.
Buy the album and enjoy the simple tunes and I guarantee that eventually you will be tapping your toes and catching your self singing along. In fact the melodies will stay with you for a long time

It's an understatement to say that Jimmy Buffett isn't all that well known in Australia. Nonetheless he has a few fans 'downunder' and there's even a fan club or two. Getting hold of his albums was not especially easy twenty years ago, but this one popped up at a record store and became my first ever JB album purchase. I appreciate that he'd been recording his songs since about 1970 (was 'High Cumberland Jubilee his first?) but, as I said, his work was hard to get hold of. This album has a great selection of Jimmy's classic songs and is an ideal introduction to his music for anyone who doesn't know who Jimmy is, as well as aspiring 'Parrotheads'. A great starting point for a Jimmy Buffett collection.
