NEW SPRING signals another personnel change for these keepers of the Scottish folk music tradition. Vocalist and keyboardist Alan Reid from the band's former line-up is joined by piper Iain MacDonald, guitarist and cittern player Alistair Russell, and 18-year old multi-instrumentalist John McCuskeron fiddle, accordion, cittern and whistle. Interestingly, the new Battlefield Band sounds more tradition-oriented than ever, without the slightest deviation from the high calibre of musicianship that has distinguished the ensemble from their earliest albums in the mid-'70s.
This 1991 release kicks off with a lively medley of traditional pipe tunes, followed by a Reid original, a pensive lullaby entitled "The Green and the Blue". McCusker's youth is disguised by his fiddling expertise (which alternately evokes crowded taverns and misty moors), and his own trad-style compositions such as "Farewell to Ravenscraig/My Night Out with Big Iain". Russell'sCeltic treatment of Charlie Rich's "I Feel Like Going Home"helps the tune blend seamlessly into the track list. It's this kind of synthesis--the mixture of old and new songs, traditional and modern instruments, and cross-cultural influences, that has maintained the Band's position as Scotland's foremost folk revivalists.

This is a great album by the Battlefield Band, packed with outstanding fiddle and pipe music from the expert fingers of
John McCusker and Iain MacDonald respectively, you will be tapping your feet.

Powerful and passionate vocals ring out from Alan Reid and Alistair Russell as they present us with a range of emigration songs from the tragic anthem Darien (my favourite) to the optimistic The Green And The Blue.

Mention also has to be made of the cheeky cautionary tale The Devil Uisge Beatha. Pure magic.
