Product Description

CD Description

HOME GROUND captures the Battlefield Band performing live in the Highlands of their native Scotland, birthplace of the lively, evocative folk music that is the ensemble's forte. Included here is a blend of traditional music--played on fiddles, citterns, pipes, flutes and mandolins--with the group'soriginal compositions, many of which, such as the anthemic "The Yew Tree" and the story-ballad "The Dear Green Place" were written by group founders Brian McNeill and Alan Reid.
This live set is especially notable for the presence on several cuts of Dougie Pincock's fine bagpipe work. The gorgeous, mournful sound of the Highland pipes drives the opener, "Home Ground", "Pincock's Pleasure", and "The Hornpipes". The Aberdeen audience goes crazy when the Band pitches a curveball version of Wilson Pickett's "Land of 1000 Dances", augmented and Celtified into the rock & roll/jigs 'n' reels medley of traditional and pop songs in "Band Of A Thousand Chances", featuring special guest Duncan MacGillvray on whistle and moothie. A lovely Scottish air--"Peace and Plenty"--closes out the set, bringing things back to the warm, familiar territory of the album's title.
