DRAG is one more inspired nail in the coffin of Lang's image as a neo-country singer. On the heels of 1995's electronic/dance-oriented ALL YOU CAN EAT, DRAG purports to be a concept album, with all the songs thematically linked by the common subject of cigarettes and smoking. While this link is tenous, uniting such tunes as the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" and an otherwise-inexplicable cover of Steve Miller's "The Joker", what really matters here is not the concept, butthe music.
With production aid from jazz-pop ace Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Jimmy Scott), Lang offers up a sumptuous collections of ballads, gorgeously arranged and beautifully sung. Despite her reputation as a belter, she approaches the songs on DRAG with grace and subtlety, making this lush collection a stirring, understated pleasure.

Of all kd lang's albums, this is my favourite. It shows her at her most vocally dynamic, powering her way through emotional songs and whispering in a cigarette fuelled way on others.
The instrumentation is excellent too. The album has a smooth & jazzy feel to it that makes it an unbelievably laid back album to relax to, or else to sing your lungs off to.
The tracks range from the humerous to the melancholic and all stand out as beautiful pieces of music.
This is such a wonderful album.

Beautiful, breathtaking, and darker-than-darker-than-dark. I really cannot rate this album highly enough. From the 'Psycho'-inspired opening of 'Don't Smoke In Bed' right through to the last notes of 'Love is Like a Cigarette', it just doesn't get any better.

'Your Smoke Screen' is hugely frustrating (please give us another chorus!), 'Hain't it Funny' was an inspired song to begin with, and 'Til the Heart Caves In' will have you singing until the cows come home. It is truly, truly inspired, with lavish production and nothing left out. Even the weakest songs have been transformed by the lang treatment. An absolute must-have.

Kd Lang has a habit of making albums that are designed not to sell. Ingenue had a title no one knew how to pronounce and probably would have been a bigger seller if called Diva or such like. All You Can Eat had a great title but one of those decieving covers that made it look more like back ground music for a Sushi party. Drag really took the biscuit- an album cover with, shock horror! a woman dressed as a man. And to make matters worse the word 'drag' in pretty script. And so the album bombed sales wise. But thats such a shame because its a great album, and in many respects her best vocal performance to date. Rather than singing about male impersonation (other than a laid back butch cover of the Joker) the album focuses on Kd's favourite pass time- smoking. 12 songs all about smoking. Hardly sounds like a recipe for success but it works brilliantly. Some classic tunes mixed with some less well known works, all beautifully arranged, sung and strummed. Standout tracks? Well The Air that You Breathe beats Simply Red's rather pedestrian cover. My Last Cigarette has a beautiful wistful plod about it (very Eddi Reader- written by Boo H) and I love the Valley of the Dolls theme. Go buy and sink in- its not full of instant appeal but once lodged will probably be on replay for weeks with the lights dimmed low. Oh and I still haven't given up smoking.
