The beauty of this album is the variety of influences that go together to make a very unusual, yet unpretentious pop/rock sound. You could call it "jazz" because of the double bass, "funk" because of the bouncy drums, or "weird" because of the samples and sound effects, but what is amazing is how the intelligence and musicality of all four players makes a mockery of any attempt to classify them. There is a gentle blues feel in "Soft Serve" and "How many cans", a harder hip-hop edge in "Super Bon Bon", cheesy clarinet-filled bopping in "Disseminated", and angry, hectic funk in "White Girl". The lyrics throught the album are unashamedly 'clever', which seems to add to their honesty and intensity rather than compromising it. Despite all their genre-blurring, some of these songs could easily fit into the limited 'commercial' brackett peddled by English radio stations. The album, however, remains just a little too sophisticated for most 'pop' listeners to handle. Quality.

What a thrashing this got when it was hogging my CD drawer just over 10 years ago ! It's great when you stumble across an album that fuses so many different styles and yet ends up not really sounding like any of them. There's hip-hop in there, there's guitar indie in there, the bonkers spirit of people like Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart is in there somewhere too and yet it sounds like no other band.
The first and third albums are also worth a listen, but this one is just exceptional. Here's hoping it's not doomed to total obscurity in the future - it has all the marks of an obscure classic, waiting to be found by another generation.
