5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite albums of the 90's, 12 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Raise the Pressure (Audio CD)
I was surprised to see the only other reviews for Raise the Pressure were so damning and felt compelled to offer an alternative opinion. This is one of my favourite albums and is one of those rarities that doesn't have a duff track. Admitedly, it did take about 10 listenings to appreciate it fully and it really grows on you, like all the best albums do so it's worth having some patience. I think it's the inspired melodies that Johnny Marr writes that makes this so special, both in the guitar and keyboard dominated tracks, just as it was for the Smiths in their tour de force, "the Queen is Dead". Frankly I think this is a hell of a lot better that the debut album "Electronic" which I found wimpy in comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raise the average!, 14 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Raise the Pressure (Audio CD)
Almost any sequel, and especially one so cleanly and clinically produced, would have suffered by comparison with the easy brilliance of Electronic's debut. I prefer to see `Raise The Pressure' as very superior electro-pop in its own right, a fine set of songs, and a full measure of Marr & Sumner's unique style of upbeat, melodic melancholy.

The guitar-based numbers, from the excellent opener `Forbidden City' onwards, blend seamlessly with the less `credible' (given the unfortunate predominance of fashion in electronic music) but even more enjoyable synth-led tracks. `Dark Angel', `If You've Got Love', `Until the end of time' and `Freefall' have the addictive quality of all good dance music; apparently revelling in their own deceptive shallowness, and perfectly complemented by Sumner's standard deadpan delivery and the superbly vacuous lyrics.

If you prefer your Electronic with a spikier, frazzled, Marrr-as-guitar-hero edge, then `Twisted Tenderness' is the preferred option. But the boys' ear for a good tune is rarely better showcased than here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 22 Jul 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Raise the Pressure (Audio CD)
I remember eagerly awaiting a new Electronic album, since the first was so enjoyable and long lasting. When this one came out I was initially disappoined and it took a while to get into it. After that phase it just became one of the best albums I had and I played it to death. Almost every track is catchy, but different. And many are very atmospheric.

Now I'm trying to get into Twisted Tenderness, which is quite hard!
