Product Description

CD Description
For the artist intermittently known as Prince, the notion of spiritual death and rebirth has become the predominant theme in his work. Thus on the track "Solo", with its eerie liturgical ambience, sampled thunder and moody harp, Prince sings a keening falsetto confession: "Solo, my name is no one".
Accepting all that as a given, this richly orchestrated set has the exploratory sound and feel of a classic Prince album, except that COME seems to be an attempt to explicate his legend once and for all ("Letitgo"), to make way for a new...well, your guess is a good as ours.
The title tune mixes carnal and spiritual imagery in the classic Prince manner, as that ecstatic voice testifies over jazzy horns, big-band chord changes and a fat, greasy backbeat ("If you had a chance to see the future, would you try?"). Elsewhere, the sampled waves which open and close COME act as a recurring leitmotif, as Prince explores a series of jumpy dance grooves ("Pheromone" and "Loose!"), a moody tale of child abuse ("Papa"), a strutting R&B/hiphop anthem ("Race"), a brassy gospel-blues confessional ("Dark") and an explicit girl-guitar ecstasy ("Orgasm"). On COME, Prince appears before us one last time, a reminder of things past, a harbinger of revolutions to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent album..., 15 Aug 2005

Prince's 1994 album Come has a rather dire critical reputation-but then, who listens to them?
Listening to this album now,you can hear a link to the likes of D'Angelo,The Roots,Outkast,Cody Chesnutt, etc;as there is a couple of extended jams similar to those on D'Angelo's 2000 LP Voodoo, and Outkast's The Love Below definitely has some Princely overtones...
The highlights of this album are without doubt the 9-minute title track and the great should-have-been album closer Letitgo.Indeed, the only tracks that completely let the side down are the rather pointless a capella Solo and the self explantory Orgasm-perhaps if there was one more killer single on here instead more people would like this album-perhaps those whispers of 'contractual obligation' would never have surfaced...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good album........if you give it a chance., 23 Nov 1999
By dsinkins@aol.com (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
What we have here upon the first listen is a poor CD. There are no outstanding tracks to speak of, there are only 10 tracks,(we are used to plenty more) and the whole album, at first listen, seems a little flat. However, this CD contains some surprises, notably the fact that the album has been produced to perfection. Sure there are no killer tracks, but the tracks included feel right. From the jazzy drawn out jam of Come, to the racy lyrics of Pheremone, this album grows on the listener. With the track Loose, Prince sounds as if he went crazy in the studio, it is a great dance track. The track Papa, about child abuse, shows that the man can still combine his musical talents with topical issues. Then on to Race and Dark, two tracks oozing in class, combining his trademark funk and gospel. So, this CD is an odd release, but give it a go and what you have is an accomplished collection of songs that confirms the mans genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars simple and superb, 3 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This is one of the most underestimated Prince albums ever and I can't see why since to me it's his best of the 90's after "Diamonds And Pearls". The two first tracks "Come" and "Space" are feel-good jazzy tracks with a very saucy message. Although they are excellent on their own the album keeps getting better and better. The power-pop of "Pheromone" is the best track on the album and Prince's effort to do some rave on "Loose" sounds interesting but dated.Up to these point all the songs are about sex.The subject changes to child abuse with "Papa" a very angry song with an amazing rock ending and then we are treated to an R&B track("Race"),a reggae track("Dark") a surprise acapella opera track("Solo"-beautiful) and the only hit-single from the album the beautiful R&B "Letitgo" comes last before the ,hmm. theater "piece" of "Orgasm".I wouldn't agree that the album has no killer songs. Although none of the songs are commercial enough to make hit singles, each and every song on this album is a killer song on its own.
