Product Description

Description
After the rococo indulgences of MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE, Costello decided to return to his roots with BRUTAL YOUTH. Re-uniting with the Attractions, whose quirky, angular sound poweredhis finest albums, Elvis scaled down the arrangements to a more manageable level and brought his songwriting back to basics as well. The tunes here were the closest he'd come to rock & roll in several years, and there's a feeling of abandon that energizes the proceedings. As in the glory days, Steve Nieve's spindly keyboards provide most of the instrumentalcolor as Elvis sings his spleen out on hard-hitting tunes like "Kinder Murder" and "13 Steps Lead Down". The black humor of "This is Hell" recalls the career-peak songwriting of Costello's SPIKE days, and the British Invasion-style raveup "Just About Glad" steals the show while exposing Costello's '60s influences.
This is a bracing set, picking up as if eight years hadn't even passed since their previous outing (BLOOD & CHOCOLATE). Now expanded to a two- disc set, it's rich with alternate or early versions, a couple previously released B-sides (including the brilliant "Life Shrinks"). The version of "Favourite Hour" (the song from which came the album's title) recorded at an earlier session shows it to be brilliantly close to Procol Harum. While the formative takes offer some potent glimpses of the arrangement process, the officially released versions are a testament to Costello knowing what he was after. In addition, his liner notes are revealing and--not surprisingly--very well written.

The guy is a genius lyricist.
I bought this for £2 from a 2nd hand shop for no good reason other than it was cheap. Very well worth buying this album. I've had it for five years and it's back in the cd player on repeat. There are at least four stand out tracks on this album that would be career highs for a lot of other artists. I'm not going to quote lyrics out of context as they might lose some Elvis magic. He & the band mix outstanding musicianship with top drawer tunes & scythingly insightful words. Bliss!

5.0 out of 5 stars As per usual, 28 Sep 2000
By A Customer
It gets quite difficult to write reviews of Elvis albums as to my mind he rarely releases a dud. Sulky Girl, the first single from this album was a flop, but then, Elvis fans are far more album buyers than your teenybop audience.

All Elvis fans need to know is that it is his usual excellence, blending fine off-beat melodies, sardonic lyrics and a mixture of orchestral arrangements and 'hard' rock. If I ever got to meet Elvis, I would ask him one question: "Can you never find any joy in the world?"
