5.0 out of 5 stars The B-52's neglected masterpiece, 21 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Before this album was properly completed guitarist and principle song writer Ricky Wilson died, leaving the B-52's to carry on and become hugely popular under the guidence of Kieth Strickland. While they obviously produced some great material post-'Bouncing Off the Satellites', nothing equalled this little known gem. After being lost in the wilderness for several albums, and unable to recapture the glory of their first album, the band finally found a maturity of style based on concise and precise songwriting, playing, production and performance. The listener only has to hear the opening chords of 'Ain't I Ashamed' to recognise that he/she is listening to a perfectly constructed pop song, and what follows never lets up - effective as a result of the superbly crafted timing as well as the haunting melancholy of Cindy Wilson's vocals.
This is an album that is a triumphant accumulation of all that has gone before: the sixties pop sensibility of the earlier albums is here, as well as a more refined distillation of the attempts to progress that the group didn't quite manage to pull off on such albums as 'Mesapotamia' and 'Whammy'. There is a 'life is a beach' anthem, 'Song For A Nude Beach', over-the-top exhuberance in 'Wig', and the surreal and psychadaelic 'Detour Through Your Mind'. In 'She Brakes for Rainbows' the band evoke an almost platonic, ethereal image of the ultimate hippy-chick without ever sounding merely whimsical: "Footsteps on the ceiling/ How did they get there?"
"Bouncing Off the Satellites' is a fantastic album; I cannot recommend it enough. Delighted as I am that the B-52's went on to great success after this album, I am saddened that Ricky Wilson never lived to share in it, and that we will never know what the band could have become had he lived.

5.0 out of 5 stars a downplayed and overlooked classic, 6 April 2008
By amir m (glasgow, scotland) - See all my reviews
the only reason this isn't up there with the band's other greats like "wild planet" and "cosmic thing" was the sad death of ricky wilson during the production of this work. the band were in mourning with the release of the record and the subsequent promotion of the record was minimal. the record itself heralded a new b-52s sound - much more polished and sophisticated with the heavy use of synths and hi-tech production techniques. the overall sound is exceptionally lush and vibrant. of course this would be meaningless without great songs. thankfully the quality of the songwriting and arranging is very high. the songs, in true b-52s style, are quirky, fun and addictively catchy. there are also some contemplative tracks with a slight melancholic feel - "ain't it a shame" and the gorgeous "she brakes for rainbows". cindy's and kate's vocals, in isolation and in unison, are just lovely, particularly cindy's. a truly great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best B-52's album, 27 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Firstly, I'll compare this to the other B-52's albums.
The early ones tend to be a bit patchy. Cosmic Thing is pretty good, but more dancey. Good Stuff, well, I don't think that it is their best.

I can't think of a track on this album that isn't brilliant pop. "Housework" is very funny to boot. I'm glad that they stuck with it long enough to get this far.

If you like this, then you might also like The Sugarcubes and They Might Be Giants.
