Product Description

CD Description

"Shower The People", with its richly textured vocal harmonies, opens James Taylor's "IN THE POCKET and sets the tone for all that follows, a virtual pop vocal chorale. Choir boy Art Garfunkel takes a lush guest turn on "A Junkie's Lament" and "Captain Jim's Drunken Dream". On his satiric anthem to the almighty dollar "Money Machine", James is joined by vocal dancing partner Valerie Carter, and they move across the song like a funked-out Fred and Ginger. David Crosby, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, and James' brother Alex alldrop by to lend a voice throughout the album. But the guestof honour has to be Stevie Wonder, who co-wrote "Don't Be Sad 'Cause Your Sun Is Down" with James, and contributes his always delightful and distinctive chromatic harmonica. IN THE POCKET is fresh, musically diverse, and fun, handily produced by Russ Titleman and Lenny Waronker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rather more than not bad (Brit irony), 26 Nov 2002
"In the pocket" confirmed JT's move towards mid-70s funk. Listen to "Woman's gotta have it" (perhaps a bit non-Pc). At the same time he kept up his folk background - "Captain Jim's drunken dream" - and starts to nod towards his later less hardline stuff with "Everybody's got the blues". "Daddy's all gone" shows his newly-begun parenthood, and "Don't be sad 'cause your sun is down" is just amazing: in an uplifting key and with Stevie Wonder playing the mouth organ (OK I'm English, and follow Larry Adler on this) you can't get better than this. There's so much variety on it. Buy, buy, buy!
