Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Paul Westerberg often cited the Faces as a major influence on the Replacements, and it's easy to see how bar room rockers like this 1973 album's "Borstal Boys" made a dent in the aesthetic that produced "I.O.U." and "Takin a Ride". More than anything though, Westerberg was affected by the late Ronnie Lane's closed-door weepers ("Flags and Banners" and dejected apologias ("Glad and Sorry"). Rod Stewart also essays a sensitive moment or two, notably on the single "Cindy Incidentally", which nearly equals "You Wear It Well" as a masterpiece of the heartfelt affection he once commanded so effortlessly. --Rickey Wright

CD Description
By the time the Faces' fourth album came out in 1973, Rod Stewart had already become a solo superstar, causing stresseswithin the band. Stewart and founding member/bassist RonnieLane reportedly fought throughout the making of OOH LA LA, particularly when Stewart's solo commitments kept him from attending Faces recording sessions. That tension is perhaps evident in the grooves of OOH LA LA--it's probably not a coincidence that the folksy, acoustic title track sounds more like "Maggie May" than any previous Faces effort, even though guitarist Ron Wood sings lead.
Lane takes lead vocals on his own "Flags and Banners" and wrote the majority of the album's latter half. The remaining parts of OOH LA LA include Stewart and Wood's boogie-fried "Silicone Grown" and two songs spotlighting the inimitable keyboardist Ian McLagan--the atypically poppy, almost Elton John-like "Cindy Incidentally" and the stomping rocker "Borstal Boys", one of the Faces' finest tunes. Although hints of the band's dissolution are everywhere throughout the record, this is paradoxically also the most "group"-like album the Faces ever did, with all five members making significant contributions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice album with a couple of great tracks, 2 Nov 2004
The Faces only released 4 studio albums and this was the final one. Live, they were the best rock band in the world. In the studio, they leaned more towards country-rock and Ronnie Lane had a lot more influence both in songwriting and singing duties.

This album is a bit of a swansong for Ronnie. As his influence in the band waned, so did his interest and he soon left to form Slim Chance.

The title track is brilliant, but although many people think it is Ronnie Lane singing, it is infact Ron Wood - hence the fact that it sounds like the singer has been gargling with scouring powder. We used to joke at the time that Ron Wood made Arthur Mullard sound like Julie Andrews (if you don't know who they are, ask your dad).

If you like this, try the other Faces albums (particularly Nod's and Long Player) and Rod's first 4 albums are also pretty good. Don't be tempted by Ron Wood's solo album (I've got my own album to do) - it's awful. Stick to the painting Ron!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the title track, 10 Aug 2006

All around great album, the album cover on the LP (not CD) is great - if you squeeze it from top to bottom the grumpy man smiles.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, 19 April 2003
Good 'pub rock' fayre. A certain balance is achieved by the alternation between vocalists - Ronnie Lane and Rod Stewart. While Ronnie sings on the more thoughtful, sentimental numbers ('Flags And Banners' or 'Ooh La La' for instance), Rod seems happier singing about ladies with artificially enhanced breasts ('Silicone Grown') and a girl called Cindy ('Cindy Incidentially'). The weak instrumental 'Fly In The Ointment' wedges itself uncomfortably in the middle of the record. Lane sounds honest and excellent on 'Ooh La La', making more of the song that Stewart did later on. As per usual, Ronnie Wood's guitar work holds the fort, a mix of acoustic and electric with flecks of slide.

I expect that comment on the artwork or an album is frowned upon, but I feel that it is an important part of the music and can influence how one feels about the sounds contained within. Not sure what's up with the geyser on the front but the inner displays Mr. Woods hair in all its glory and is a nice touch. Seriously, that is an exceptional buffon, sir!

Feel good, pub rock with raw Rod Stewart vocals. This album evokes the feeling of early, earthy rock. Read more
