5.0 out of 5 stars different, 26 Dec 2005
By Paul J. Mahoney "Paul Jason" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This album is very different to anything I've really heard. The band is made up of most of the members of Savatage which made me assume it would be another one of their usual rock operahs, but it was so much more than that. This is a beautiful album filled with cleverly orchestrated powerful music. It combines traditional classic Christmas music with modern rock giving it a good combination of well balanced tunes filled with sentiment, passion and nostalgic thoughfulness. The album follows a story of an angel that travels across the world to find out the meaning of Christmas with each song representing something different that the angel learns through various stories, but with one underlining story. Half of the album is instrumental, integrating plenty of piano, some heavy guitar melodies and light acoustic numbers recreating classic Christmas carols. Different guest singers add more variety to the album as well as its overwhelming depth and randomness that exists through its stylish contropuntal nature produced by some very talented musicians. Overall, if you love good music dont mind a bit of cheese and have an open mind then this is definately worth getting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good album!!!!!, 7 Nov 2003

I first heard this album about 2 years ago and had to track it down. I am not into Christmassy albums on the whole but this is different. The band features several members of Savatage and that was one of the other reasons why I was so glad to add it to my collection.

The whole album is amazing but it's the 2 ballady pieces that I love so much, namely Ornament and Old City Bar, the latter of which nearly always brings me to tears ... what a great song! Then there is This Christmas Day which features some stunning lead guitar ... wow!!!!

Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24) is also featured on parent band Savatage's "Dead Winter Dead" album, where I have to say it does fit in better. Having said that, this could very easily have been a cheesy effort but it is not, it works very well and I would recommend it to anyone who want to hear a Christmas-influenced album that packs more emotion and punch than the average fare available out there.

But do check out parent band Savatage. They are awesome!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent value package of great music, 23 Jan 2002
By Mr. Alastair Murray "theuprightman" (Lisburn, Co. Antrim Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this double CD because I am a fan of the group Savatage. As Trans-Siberian Orchestra features some Savatage members I thought I might like them. I can say that I wasn't disappointed. The production and content of these CDs are excellent. I would recommend this to anyone out there. It is not really the heavy metal affair that I was expecting. But that was not at all disappointing. It was more akin to the likes of the Savatage extravaganza that was Dead Winter Dead. It combines this sort of heavy metal with traditional Christmas carols!!! This was definitely a bonus as I am also a Christian, and the few carols that featured sounded amazing with guitar instrumentation.

I believe this to be a thoroughly enjoyable musical experience for anyone who either likes Savatage or just wants to hear some Christmas themed music with a difference.
