Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
For Pantera, rage flows like water from a tap. Far Beyond Driven vents the band's animosity in a maelstrom of hateful harangues fuelled by thunderous drumbeats, piercing guitar noise, and raw-throated vocals. --Jon Wiederhorn

CD Description
Not since the last asteroid collision with planet Earth untold eons ago has there been a apocalyptic event to equal themusical Krakatoa that is Pantera's FAR BEYOND DRIVEN. Walking a stylistic line somewhere between the melodious crunch pop of Metallica and the punkish thrashorama of Helmet, Pantera channels their raging energy into songs that function as aural letterbombs from hell--designed to detonate in your face. Never have records quite as rude as FAR BEYOND DRIVEN (or Nine Inch Nail's THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL) broken out at #1 on the Top 200 of Billboard's pop charts. There must be a reason.
Immerse yourself in the first single off of FAR BEYONDDRIVEN, the thrashing "I'm Broken", and you'll get a good idea as to the method behind Pantera's madness--and what makes them such trendsetters in the thermonuclear epoch after heavy metal, speed metal and thrash have run their course. Thearrangement opens with a classic Led Zeppelin rifforama (almost a blues figure); then they ride along on a single chordover an odd, slightly spastic rhythm figure a la Helmet; finally they allow these conflicting notions of noise to collide in hyperspace, setting the stage for a pithy, pulverisingguitar orgasm by Dimebag Darrell that is blissfully melodic, almost in spite of itself.
Or check out "Use My Third Arm", a terrifying journey into the world of police brutality. Vocalist Phillip Anselmo froths and rants like an enraged Electrolux, sucking in noise and spewing out hostility over Dimebag's jittery power-riffs. Drummer Vinnie Paul turns popular rhythm conventions on their head, letting the bass and guitar carry the carnage while choosing to spray short bursts of small arms fire in an arrhythmic fury like a deranged dixieland drummer. When Pantera finally tucks us all in with an affectionate cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan", it's as if they're trying to recollect a romantic folk song from some bygone era. As for the rest of FAR BEYOND DRIVEN...well, you want heavy--this is heavy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best album by Pants, 14 April 2003
To be honest, I thought that this fantastic when it was released, however it has not stood up well to time. To me now it all sounds too tired and repetitive. There ARE good tracks on the album, most notably 5 minutes alone, which is one of Pantera's best ever tracks. However Hard lines, is just complete rubbish. Phil's stupid lyrics being spoken over a bass & drum backing. Basically with this album Pantera tried to out heavy the previous album (A Vulgar Display Of Power). Fine. However what they forgot to do is write PROPER SONGS! They really are a series of harsh heavy riffs put together without too much thought. For better songs check out "A Vulgar Display.." or "Cowboys From Hell", their previous 2 & far better albums. Sorry guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of THE definitive Metal Albums, 27 May 2001
By A Customer
I only bought this recently, but it completely blew my head off. I'd heard their debut ( Cowboys fron Hell ) & I wasn't too keen as it kinda had the whiole 80's vibe to it that I personally dont dig that much, but by the time you get to this ( Their 3rd album ) things have changed completely. Phil Anselmo now screams and cries like a demented Max Cavalera while still writing clever lyrics to vent his rage, Dimebag Darrell is one of the most technically brilliant guitarists you will ever hear, but on this record he adapts and updates his sound, playing super heavy stuff, with less speed metal riffs and solos ( instead he saves the solos for when they sound good, not just playing 1 or 2 every song for the sake of it, but when he does play them, they sound even better.)Vinnies drumming is also greatly improved on this album, with a thundering onslaught using the double bass peddles. This is a revolutionary band, who set the pattern for every "Nu-Metal" band you will have heard in the last 5 years, but I can honestly say that none that I have heard are as talented musically, or write as great songs. Every song is a standout track. If I had to pick my favourites, 5 minutes Alone, Hard Lines & Sunken Cheeks, Slaughtered & Shedding Skin. BUY THIS NOW! You are unlikely to hear many better metal albums in your life, and none at this price!

5.0 out of 5 stars One dirty monster, 5 May 2006
By Some Bloke (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is a dirty, snarling monster of an album, the illigitimate son of Motorhead's attitude and the birth of thrash. Guitarist Dimebag does more with his guitar than many bands do with a two-guitar attack, with heavy riffs and deadly hooks.

Vocalist Phil Anselmo crawls filthy from the gutter with the sole intention of making your ears bleed with his diatribe of attitude. He's screaming without affectation about himself and the world. My goodness children, this chap really is a cross man!

This far outshines anything else Pantera did and is one of the most complete metal records of all time. There's creativity all the way through and each track stands alone. Somehow, they seem to have acheived this naturally.

There's bags of attitude in their attempt to scare the establishment. Listen and enjoy.
