This album is a sort of collection of bizarre fairy stories. The music differs wildly from any of the post- Gabriel 1990's Genesis, in that the music is more interesting, progressive, and intelligent. The opener, The Musical Box, is a brilliant nine-minute keyboard-led story, in that the music itself is very much through-composed and advances along the song. This style continues for the rest of the album, with the music being inventive (eg. Half way through 'The Musical Box' when Collins starts playing around with the beats). There are frequent instrumental solos, and you will be hard pressed to find any basic chord sequences. The Return of the Giant Hogweed opens with one of the best keyboard riffs of the early seventies, and changes time signature frequently and inventively. The finale, The Fountain of Salmacis, with its rather bizarre lyrics, is a masterpiece, with some of the finest instrumentation ever. Throughout the whole record Gabriel's superior vocals and melody provide the finishing touch. Overall, this is an album which flows extremely well (the sort that is best listened to all the way through). If you like Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and King Crimson, you will like this.

If your a Genesis fan like me then I had all the albums/cd's. I rebought a remastered seconds out that was it I was hooked. I bought a remaster of them all. These cds are now so clean its like hearing new songs all over again. Well worth buying.
