Product Description

CD Description

On 1985's SHE'S THE BOSS, Mick Jagger leaves behind the classic blues- and R&B-influenced Rolling Stones sound and, instead, moves forward in a more contemporary vein. Jeff Beck (one of the many guests on the album) provides virtuosic guitar work, but here his approach has more in common with the transitional sounds of the mid-'80s than it does with old-school rock & roll. Further, Sly Dunbar's electronic drum kit adds a synthetic feel to many of these tracks.
Despite thelack of a strong Stones vibe, these songs still play to Jagger's strengths. For instance, "Running Out of Luck" is a simple tune that focuses on bad luck and demoralisation (favourite Jagger subjects) to create a perfect combination of orthodox rock and mid-'80s pop. Likewise, the opening cut, "Lonely at the Top" is a straight-up rocker, gilded by heavy useof synthesizers. The highlight of SHE'S THE BOSS is "Hard Woman", a tender ballad about love gone wrong. On this selection, Jagger croons over a lush string section, while Pete Townshend fills up the spaces with gentle acoustic guitar strumming.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mick's Mixed Bag, 24 Mar 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
'She's The Boss' really sounds dated these days - even more dated than much of Mick Jagger's work in the sixties and seventies with the Stones.

Mick has always been the Stone who's been most conscious of trends and fashions and at times hasn't been slow to incorporate them into his (or the Stones) music. Unfortunately though the mid-eighties synthetic sound with heavy drum beats and a clean (almost sterile) production was only a passing phase and was never a match in longevity terms for the raw, more human, perennial sounds of the sixties and seventies. In some ways Mick's eagerness to flirt with the trends of this period has backfired badly in hindsight.
Production aside,'She's The Boss' is possibly a far more merticulous album in term of song quality and also vocal performance than the standard Mick and the Stones were setting in that period. One gets the feeling Mick really did dedicate himself to making this, his first solo album the best he could. The lead single 'Just Another Night' is still for me his most satisfying solo single ('Memo From Turner' aside) and 'Hard Woman' is one of his most effective ballads for years. 'Lonely At The Top' is a great song which Mick had originally written with Keith Richards and it has a great vibrancy about it - particuarly in Mick's vocal delivery, however, like many of the tracks the incessant 80s drum sound is a little hard to swallow after a while. 'She's The Boss' - the title track is also very sharp and energetic if once again the production hampers its effectiveness, somewhat. Many of the other tracks have a flashy, funky sound with plenty of energy but what they all lack is some real grit.

Overall, 'She's The Boss' is of its time and really struggles to fit outside that context. The songs are generally quite sharp and focused and the sound has a real energy about it. It's certainly an enjoyable listening experience at times. However, it's mainly a very artificial experience without much in the way of genuine soul.

'She's The Boss' is not without some redeeming qualities but ultimately it fails to stand the test of time.
