Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Even darker than their purple-hued debut, the Doors' follow-up, Strange Days, closed 1967 with an ominous flourish. Highlighted mostly by short, radio- friendly tunes such as the bluesy "Love Me Two Times" and the cabaret-style "People Are Strange" and featuring a smattering of edgy recitations ("Horse Latitudes") and smoky rockers ("My Eyes Have Seen You"), the album features a centerpiece that was another ambitious extended track, "When the Music's Over". On it, Morrison railed at everything from organised religion to pollution, and his rallying cry--"We want the world, and we want it now!"--became a call to arms for the counterculture rising up around the band. --Billy Altman

CD Description

The Doors' second album redefined their uncompromising art.The disturbing timbre of Ray Manzarek's organ work providedthe musical cloak through which guitarist Robbie Kreiger and vocalist Jim Morrison projected. Few singers in rock possessed his authority, where every nuance and inflection bore an emotional intensity. STRANGE DAYS contains some of the quartet's finest work, from the apocolyptic vision of the epic "When The Music's Over" to the memorable quirkiness of "People Are Strange" and "Moonlight Drive". The graphic "Horse Latitudes", meanwhile, confirmed Morrison's wish to be viewed as a poet, a stance ensuring that the Doors would always be more than just another rock band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Classic, 30 April 2001
By A Customer
Most Doors' fans will nominate either the first album or L.A.Woman as their favourites, but this is the real gem of the collection. Whilst the songs with the greater initial impact were included on the impressive debut album, Strange Days has a deeper, more languid feel to it. The movement from 4 track to 8 track recording and the use of a bass player broadened the Doors' sound and is used here to great effect to heighten a sense of mystery which seeps through the album. A collection of twisted, yet beautiful pychedelic pop songs with darkness running just below the surface. It culminates in the even darker epic and their first foray into the overtly political, When The Music's Over. Released in the same year as the debut album and often overlooked because of it, Strange Days is the last example of the Doors' early burst of creativity. If you're new to the Doors, get the first album. Then buy this one to see how this band can get inside your head. Often cited as the band's own favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars strangely brilliant, 31 Dec 2002
its just brilliant. 'when the musics over' is possibly the most hugely pompous and over the top piece of music recorded by a rock band in the last 30-40 years but it works. 11 mins of brilliance, and lyrics that put jim morrison into rock n' roll legend. 'strangely' this was at the end of a very radio friendly album. from this album, the doors sadly lost their flow, with only final record 'LA Woman' coming close. If you're new to them, id probably say this is their second best record behind the debut self titled one. We want the world and we want it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Doors sound, 19 Jul 2002
The Doors second album came out soon after their debut album and although a critical and commercial success it was overshadowed somewhat by the first album.
However, in this album you have music which captures the archetypal early Doors sound. Morrison's husky baritone, Kreiger's fluid guitar, Manzarek's phantom carnivalesque ogan and Densmore's jazzy drums combine with imaginative lyrics to create that sound.
The album's themes are about alienation and insecurity and probably capture these moods better than most other albums.
The music although sometimes ominous and eerie is still uplifting.
The songs on this album are beautiful vignettes about the themes mentioned above.
If you're a casual Doors fan and perhaps own the first and last albums, check this out its beauty repays time and again.
