Product Description

CD Description
"I'll tell you every place and person that I've been". Cobalt blue and dour all over, AN AMERICAN PRAYER is primarily an up-close studio collage of Jim Morrison's verse (read by the author) spread over glorious Doors-rock, interspersed with live snatches of the singer/poet's on-stage antics. The images here evoke the seedy underbelly of post-hippie America, the disturbingly familiar manifestations of a troubled national conscience. The recording does, however, manage to maintain a sparkling psychedelic quality throughout.
Several of the songs will be familiar to those who own the soundtrack to the 1991 film The Doors, but the original context givesthem more weight. The title track is like a combined reprise to "Ghost Song" and the classic "The End", replete with Morrison's strange questions and even strangers assertions. The band sounds crisp, playing music that has a distinctively '70s thrust. Robby Krieger's guitar rips as fluidly as ever. All in all, a candid tour through the dimly lit passages ofa haunted soul--at once personal and quite American.

5.0 out of 5 stars any real fan of The Doors must surely own a copy of this album, 11 Jul 2006
By Mike J. Wheeler (Kingswinford, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is the 1978 release of music layed down by the remining members of The Doors over a poetry soundtrack recorded by Jim Morrison in 1970. For some reason when people write about The Doors this album is rarely mentioned. However, any real fan of The Doors must surely own a copy of this album. It really captures the mood of the end of the hippy period, when things were looking far more dark and menacing than they had for some years. It also is the perfect encapsulation of everything that Morrison was about. He much preferred to be thought of as a poet than a rock star. the interlacing of The Doors music over Morrison's words works phenomenally. The music reflects the poetry and the whole thing does NOT look like it was thrown together with 8 intervening years. It's a really under-rated album and worth anyone spending their money on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Putting the Doors in context, 5 May 2004
By A. Harden (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews

This album has an appealingly polished veneer: the new music sounds fresh and vibrant, and Jim Morrison's wonderful voice floats slickly over the top. The new music of the Doors sounds tailor-made to fit his poetry, with familiar reworkings of old themes and recurring elements. The poetry itself is very vivid, if a little jarring at times for its more explicit content; I feel that this album is most valuable for the samples of older Doors' recordings and Jim Morrison's singing; the poetry and samples don't help to explain the older lyrics, but put them in context: they make the lyricist, who is frequently lost behind the instrumentalists, stand out as a poet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Morrison-The Lizard King, 28 Dec 2003
By S. Newman "FilmBuff" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An American prayer is a collection of poems wrote by jim before he died with music by the rest of the doors.
Its such a fitting album for his sad end as he refers to his own death in the ablum many times. which contains some great work such as ghost song and bird of prey. When i first heard the album i thought it was great and i still feel that way about it everytime i listen to his calming voice and the hypnotic music of the doors.
Contains explicit language
